When it comes to countertops, you have tons of options! Every countertop material comes with different price points and advantages, so when choosing a countertop, you can really tailor your choice to fit your wants and needs. In this blog, we will be breaking down the advantages & disadvantages of our 4 most popular countertop options.
Granite
When most people think about countertops, they think granite. It is by far the most acknowledged countertop material and for good reason (if cost is not a factor). Though expensive, granite is incredibly durable, unaffected by heat, and virtually maintenance free if sealed and installed correctly. Granite comes in thousands of different colors and styles, and can actually add value to your home. Other than price, the only disadvantages that come along with granite are dependant on installation and care. Granite should only be installed by a professional, and can crack if installed improperly. Stains can occur if the countertop is not sealed correctly. Overall, granite is a great option for countertops.
Marble
If you’re looking for something completely unique, marble is for you. Every sheet of marble is different which is appealing to many homeowners. Marble is pretty much waterproof and heatproof, but definitely not damage-proof. As a very temperamental natural stone, marble is easily scratched and stained (unless professionally sealed with a high quality sealer). This countertop option definitely has a high price tag, but does add value to your home. This luxurious countertop is stunning, however not ideal for a whole kitchen.
Quartz
Quartz gives you the best of both worlds. This man made stone has a very similar look to granite and marble without the staining and scratch risks. Quartz is nonporous, so there is no sealing required and still stands up the stains, scratches, and heat damage. All slabs of each color look exactly the same and have no imperfections. There are also thousands of options to choose from and can be custom made to fit any size and/or shape.
Wood/Butcher Block
Wooden countertops are becoming very common because of the beautiful warmth it adds to the room. Though wood is subject to scratches from knives, it can be sanded down and resealed to buff out surface level imperfections. Wooden countertops do require quite a bit of maintenance; to prevent cracks or bacteria build up, wood needs to be oiled and resealed pretty frequently.
